A hot air balloon safari begins long before the sun rises. As the African wilderness sleeps beneath a blanket of stars, you’ll set out on one of the most extraordinary adventures of your safari.
From your lodge or camp, you’ll be collected in the early hours of the morning—typically between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM, depending on your location and the time of year. Accompanied by your safari guide, you’ll travel through the still, quiet bush to the designated balloon launch site, where the excitement begins.
As you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by the balloon crew and invited to enjoy a warm cup of freshly brewed coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while watching the giant balloon slowly come to life. Powerful burners fill the colourful envelope with hot air, transforming what was moments ago a giant piece of fabric into an impressive aircraft standing several storeys high.
The atmosphere is magical. As dawn begins to colour the horizon, the first sounds of birds fill the air and the African wilderness slowly awakens around you.
After a comprehensive safety briefing from your experienced pilot, you’ll climb into the spacious woven basket, specially designed with individual compartments to provide comfort and stability throughout the flight.
As the burners roar gently overhead, the balloon lifts effortlessly from the ground. There is no sudden acceleration or turbulence—just a peaceful sensation of floating as the landscape slowly drifts away beneath you.

As your flight comes to an end, your pilot will identify a suitable landing site based on the morning winds.

The experienced ground crew follows the balloon throughout the flight and will be waiting to assist upon landing.

You’ll be welcomed with a celebratory glass of champagne or sparkling wine before making your way to a beautifully prepared bush breakfast in the heart of the wilderness.

Following breakfast, you’ll rejoin your safari vehicle for a leisurely game drive back to your lodge or camp.

You’ll usually arrive back at your accommodation between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM, perfectly timed to relax before lunch or continue with the next part of your day’s adventure.
Absolutely. Hot air balloon safaris are operated by highly trained, licensed commercial pilots and experienced ground crews who follow strict international aviation safety standards. Safety is always the highest priority, and every flight is carefully planned based on weather conditions before take-off.
Unlike an aeroplane or helicopter, a hot air balloon has no engine or propellers. It flies by using heated air inside the balloon, with the pilot controlling the altitude by adding or releasing heat. By changing altitude, the pilot can take advantage of different wind currents to guide the balloon’s direction.
Because there is no engine, there is no risk of an engine failure causing the balloon to “stop” in mid-air. The balloon remains airborne as long as the pilot maintains the appropriate air temperature inside the envelope.
Every balloon also carries multiple fuel cylinders, providing ample fuel for the flight and additional reserve fuel well beyond the planned duration.
If weather conditions are not considered safe, the flight is postponed or cancelled. While this may be disappointing, it reflects the operator’s commitment to passenger safety.

Throughout the flight, a dedicated ground crew follows the balloon by vehicle while maintaining communication with the pilot. Once the balloon lands, the crew is already nearby to assist passengers, pack the balloon, and transfer you to your bush breakfast or back to your safari vehicle.
This is a completely normal part of every hot air balloon safari and is all carefully coordinated.
During the flight, the balloon remains well above the wildlife below. When it is time to land, the pilot selects an open area that is safe for landing, and the ground crew arrives almost immediately to assist.
